Five Steps To Being Your Best Self

In the last “Being Remarkable” article entitled, “Design the Life Of Your Best Self” we started a discussion about being your Best Self.

In the last article, I revealed my longing for every Allumé teammate to feel they are being their Best Self, and then introduced the Five Steps to Being Your Best Self:

  1. Discover What You Secretly Wish To Feel
  2. Imagine Your Feelings As Goals
  3. Be Your Vision Now
  4. Activate the Rituals of Your Best Self
  5. Experience Daily Harvest

Today let’s start with the first step…

Discover What You Secretly Wish To Feel

So often we focus on an outcome or object we desire: more money, new job, dream vacation, thin body, loving partner, fancy home, pretty jewelry, etc.

I recommend instead to first focus on how you want to feel.

Notice that what you really crave out of that desired outcome or object is actually a feeling.

Shrouded in your desire for a “thing” or “outcome” lives a secret wish for an unmet feeling you crave…

Image result for unmet feelings

  • Being debt-free might make you feel secure, hopeful, relieved, proud, or satisfied.
  • Having a beautiful home might make you feel inspired, established, elegant, safe, content, or important.
  • Going on a dream vacation might make you feel excited, adventurous, relaxed, restful, peaceful, or festive.
  • A thin body might make you feel beautiful, acceptable, lovable, precious, sexy, worthy, or fun.
  • A loving partner might make you feel adored.

What do you secretly wish to feel?

Below is a list of popular feeling words to help you explore and ponder what you want to feel.  Or use a thesaurus to help you find the precise words that describe how your Best Self feels.

Written Exercise:

  1. Write down all of the feelings you are longing to feel.  What do you long to feel? What do you crave?
    • What do you want to feel at work?
    • What do you want to feel at home?
    • How do you want to feel in your physical body?
    • How do you want to feel in your intimate relationships?
    • How does success feel to you?
    • How does love feel to you?
    • How would you feel if you were being your Best Self?
  2. Now go through the list and circle your top 10 feelings.
  3. Now put an asterisk (*) next to your top 5 feelings.
  4. Move onto the next step below.

Example.

Great feelings! And I would assert, you ARE already these things. I bet the people closest to you, would use these words to describe you.
