Governor Lamont COVID-19 and Vaccine Update- 5/17/2021
Governor Lamont held a press conference on May 17, 2021, on the state’s response efforts to COVID-19.
The Governor was joined by Chief of Staff Paul Mounds, Chief Operating Officer Josh Geballe, and Stew Leonard the President and CEO of Stew Leonard’s.
COVID-19 Metrics: The positivity rate is 1.33 percent, and hospitalizations continue to trend down and there have been 8,194 COVID-19 related fatalities.
Vaccine Update: A total of 3,593,511 doses have been administered, with 1,685,650 individuals fully vaccinated.
- 12% of those between the ages of 12 – 15 have received their first dose.
Masks: Masks will continue to be required indoors for the unvaccinated, vaccinated individuals will not be required to abide by the mask mandate, businesses, state and local government offices, and events may choose to require universal masking. The mask mandate will continue to be in effect in certain settings such as healthcare facilities, facilities housing vulnerable populations, public and private transit, correctional facilities, schools, and childcare facilities. THIS MEANS THAT HOME HEALTH CONTINUES TO FOLLOW THE SAME PPE INSTRUCTIONS.
Schools: Masks will continue to be required in schools for the remainder of the school year. The Administration hopes that by the fall the vast majority of students have been vaccinated. The ate will be receiving $1.1 billion in federal funds for education, and the Administration is looking to spend the funds over the next few years in a transformational way.
Back to Work CT: The Administration will be offering a $1000 dollar sign-on bonus to 10,000 individuals who have been unemployed for a long period of time. The program will begin May 24th and will require individuals to acquire a full-time position for 8 weeks to be eligible.
Declaration of Public Health Emergency and Civil Preparedness Emergency: The Governor will be taking steps to re-issue the public health emergency and civil preparedness emergency declaration within the coming days.
Legislature American Rescue Plan Fund Allocation: The Governor has indicated that the Legislature and the Administration share common goals in utilizing the American Rescue Plan funds and there will be adjustments, but they are on the same path.
